This is an infectious disease caused by a new virus that had not been previously identified in humans.
COVID-19 epicentre was in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. The first case was detected on 31st December 2019.
What is COVID-19?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in many different species of animals, including cats, camels, cattle and bats. On 12th
March 2020, WHO has declared a pandemic, outbreak of respiratory disease
caused by new corona virus, the virus is called Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-Cov-2) and the disease it causes has been named "coronavirus disease 2019" (abbreviated COVID-19).
Symptoms of COVID-19
Commonly, the Symptoms of COVID-19 may appear 2-14 days after exposure. In some cases symptom appearance my be as delayed as 27-28 days. The common symptoms are:
- Fever
- Cough, can be dry or producing phlegm
- Sore throat
- Runny nose
- Fatigues or feel tired
- Shortness of breath
- Diarrhoea
- Vomiting
For your kind information, not all symptoms may be seen in an individual suspected to be infected with COVID-19.
Emergency warning sign include but are not limited to:
- Breathlessness
- Persistent chest pain
- Bluish lips or face
- Any new onset change in mental status

Higher risk of severe illness with COVID-19?
People are at greater risk in old age, or those people or individuals with weak immune system as underlying chronic health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart ailments, lung ailments, cancer.
How Coronavirus (COVID-19) spreads to others
Person-to-person: The coronavirus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person contact. If people who are in close contact with one another within approx 6 feet (2 meters).
Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.
Spread from contact with contaminated surfaces or objects: It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
Can COVID-19 be transmitted by blood transfusion: In general, respiratory are not known to be transmitted by blood transfusion, and there have been no reported cases of transfusion transmitted coronavirus.
Routine blood donor screening measures that are already in place should prevent individuals with clinical respiratory infections from donating blood. For example, blood donors must be in good health and have a normal temperature on the day of donation.

What is isolation and how it different from quarantine?
Isolation separates sick people with a contagious disease from people who are not sick.
Isolation and quarantine help protect the public by preventing exposure to people who have or may have a contagious disease.
Quarantine separates and restricts the movement of people who were exposed to a contagious disease to see if they become sick.
while isolation serves the same purpose as quarantine, it's reserved for those who are already sick. It keeps infected individuals away from healthy individuals to prevent sickness from spreading.
Duration of home quarantine: Generally, 14 days from contact with a confirmed case. However, the decision to discontinue home isolation precautions will be made on a case-by-case basis, in consultation with your doctor and state and local health departments based on your health until the risk of secondary transmission to others is thought to be low.
In certain high-risk cases, home quarantine can be up to 28 days.
According to WHO (World Health Organization) prevent the spread of COVID-19 in 7 steps
- Wash your hands frequently
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hand
- Cover your cough using the bend of your elbow or a tissue.
- Avoid crowded please and close contact with anyone that has fever or cough
- Stay at home if you feel unwell
- If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early - but call first
- Get information from trusted sources
You can take following steps to protect yourself:
- Use face mask to cover your nose and mouth.*
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. If soap water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth frequently.
- Maintain social distancing, at least 1 metre (3 feet).
- Greetings: Practice safe greetings. Avoid physical contact such as handshakes, hugging. Greet with a Namaste, hand wave, nod or a bow.
*Important:
As per new guidelines issued by Government of India, the general public
is directed to cover their mouth and nose with any available form of
mask while stepping out of the house for any purpose in order to curb
the spread of COVID-19 and maintain personal hygiene.
As
per the central govt. advisory, people can use homemade face mask of
basic cloth, handkerchief or fabric in at least two layers for this
purpose.
Cloth
masks should be cleaned with soap/detergent/disinfectant and water and
sun-dried for at least 5 hours after every single use. Masks used by one
person must not be used by any other person.
Homemade
face mask is not recommended for Health care workers, Individuals who
are in contact with or working with COVID-19 patients, patients with
COVID-19. These individuals and patients are required to wear specified
protective gear.
