What is Networking?
Networking of computers is the best means to manage information. A network is an arrangement that enables two or more computers to communicate to each other. Network of computers implies linking computers through some wires, instead it also includes the software that makes this hardware work, and also ensures that the information between these computers is exchanged without any loss or distortion. In short, it encompasses the whole gamut of hardware and software components that make a computer network operate.
Advantages of Networking
The first and the most obvious reason to have a network of computers is that they help exchange information between computers.
Lets us say you want to access data available on your colleagues machine. Now instead of going to his machine, copying this data and bringing if to your machine, you can simply connect to your colleagues machine sitting on your seat and access the required data.
Another advantage of networking is that it helps you to share your office resources more efficiently. Let us assume your office has a very good colored printer attached to one of the computers. There are others sitting on a different floor interested in taking printout on that printer.
As you know one option is to let them copy their documents bring them to the required room to take a printout - which could result in wastage of time; or provide them with a different printer -which could be very expensive, more so it could also lead to inefficient utilization of resources as most of the time these printers could be lying idle.
Another alternative would be to connect that single printer through a network to all computers. This way anyone requiring a printout could do it sitting on his table itself. This would result in efficient utilization of resource, as the same printer now would be accessible to large number of people.
Types of Networks
Networking is rather a broad term. This could mean connecting a small number of PCs spread over on floor, or a few hundreds of different types of computers spread over large distances. On the basis of the geographical spread of these computers, these can be classified into:
- LANs (Local Area Networks)
- WANs (Wide Area Networks)

But here, I would like to tell you one thing that a network engineer team will be required to maintain the entire online/offline computers network system so that there is no obstruction in your office work.
